Owing to the enforcement of the highly disturbing and oppressive anti-Gypsy laws in Germany, the Romani had no choice but to load up their wagons and forge onward to the next location. In the summer of 1427, a kumpania of roughly 120 Romani travelers, some on horseback and some on foot, arrived in Paris. The foreign travelers carried with them special passes signed by none other than Pope Martin V himself, and they claimed to be “penitent noblemen” native to Lower Egypt. They were humble Christian refugees, the travelers insisted, who had been tasked with a nonstop voyage around the world for a period of seven years, sans beds and other comforts, to express their contrition for their sins, as well as those of their ancestors. The paperwork, now widely believed to be fraudulent, requested money, food, and temporary lodgings from the Parisian ecclesiastical authorities.
